The shop
Old Dogs Barbershop sits on Yaldhurst Road in Sockburn, and stepping inside is like stepping back a few decades. Restored antique barber chairs in white enamel and red leather. Reclaimed timber walls hung with old tools. Vintage posters, a typewriter on the shelf and a banjo on the wall.
The haircuts get the same respect as the fit-out. Scissor cuts, skin fades, hot shaves with the straight razor, beard trims and flat tops, done properly and without the rush. Customers keep saying the same thing: the barbers here listen first, then cut.
Everyone gets a chair. Pre-schoolers on their first cut, students, working blokes and the old boys who have been getting the same trim for fifty years.
